Introduction:

This module explores The Normal Heart, a timely play that raises issues concerning the slow response of the federal government and the medical community, and the fragmented response of the gay community in New York and various individuals in it during the early days of the AIDS crisis. The story centers on a character who appears to be the playwright. It also concerns his lover and various friends and acquaintances that confront the crisis.

Learning Objectives:

By participating in this module, students will be able to:

1. Explore the many different opinions concerning the size and scope of the looming threat.

2. Distinguish the different battles that took place to contain the spread of the disease.

3. Consider the importance of individual and group action when faced with the slow response of city and national officials of the government, as well as the hesitance of the gay community.

4. Examine the difference between the play and the HBO adaptation of it.

Tasks:

Read the play which is available in the university bookstore, or thru vendors or the library.

10.1 Copy and paste the Normal Heart Worksheet into a page linked to your Portfolio. Answer all the questions.

10.2 From the Study Guide summarize the development of the gay movement and indicate what events contributed to the radicalization it ultimately had to take in order to bring about change. Link your summary to your Portfolio page. In the final sentences of your summary indicate what currently has happened that threatens the forward thrust of the movement.
